Progressive overload training focuses on gradually increasing the weight, resistance, or effort in workouts as the body adapts over time. Without such change, progress stalls. Indeed, small, consistent increases help build strength, endurance, and long-term physical health safely.
This method’s biological foundation rests on the general adaptation syndrome, which categorizes how humans manage physical stress. It has three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. During the alarm phase, the initial stage, the body responds to workouts with muscle tightness, fatigue, and hormonal changes. Soreness is common as the body adjusts to new demands.
At the resistance phase, muscles adapt by building tissue, improving circulation, and becoming more efficient. Strength, endurance, and coordination increase as the body learns to handle heavier loads. Muscle hypertrophy – muscle size increase due to training – occurs as skeletal fibers grow in response to repeated tension. After training, the body works to regain balance.
